CPT County Attorney Jobs
County Attorney roles sit at the intersection of law and public service, making them one of the more complex CPT placements for F-1 students. Your DSO must confirm the position is an integral part of your law curriculum, and the work authorization covers only the employer and hours listed on your I-20.

Does a County Attorney job qualify for CPT authorization?
A County Attorney position can qualify for CPT if your law school confirms it is an integral part of your J.D. curriculum. The role must be directly tied to your field of study, and your DSO must authorize it on your I-20 before you begin working. Paid and unpaid positions are both eligible, but part-time CPT during the academic term is most common for these placements.
Can I work for a county government office on CPT?
Yes. County government offices are public employers and can hire F-1 students on CPT. Unlike private employers, county offices typically don't need to file an LCA or go through DOL prevailing wage certification for CPT purposes. The authorization comes entirely from your school, not a federal agency. Confirm the office is listed correctly as the employer on your I-20 before your start date.
Will 12 months of full-time CPT eliminate my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose eligibility for OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not count toward that 12-month threshold regardless of how long it runs. For County Attorney roles that run a full academic year at full-time hours, this trade-off is a real consideration you need to raise with your DSO before accepting.
How do I find County Attorney offices that have hired F-1 students before?
Migrate Mate lets you search public-sector legal employers with CPT and OPT hiring history, which is a faster starting point than cold-contacting county HR departments. You can also ask your law school's career services office for a list of county or government employers who have previously submitted CPT offer letters, since those offices already understand the documentation requirements.
What documents does a County Attorney employer need for my CPT?
The employer's primary obligation is to provide an offer letter that includes the position title, duties, employment dates, hours per week, and the supervisor's name and contact. Your DSO uses that letter to update your I-20 and issue CPT authorization. Some county HR systems generate generic offer letters, so request a version that includes all those specifics. You handle the DSO submission; the employer does not file anything with USCIS for CPT.
