CPT Legal Counsel Jobs
Legal Counsel roles sit at the intersection of law and business strategy, making them a strong CPT match for J.D. or LLM students whose programs require supervised legal practice. Your DSO must authorize CPT before you start, and the work must directly fulfill a curricular requirement tied to your degree program.

Get Access To All JobsLegal Counsel CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does CPT authorization cover full-time Legal Counsel internships or only part-time?
CPT can be authorized for both part-time (fewer than 20 hours per week) and full-time (20 or more hours per week), but full-time CPT during an academic term can affect your OPT eligibility. Twelve or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not affect OPT. Talk to your DSO before accepting a full-time Legal Counsel role mid-semester.
Can I do CPT as a Legal Counsel at a company where I might want to work after graduation?
Yes, and this is one of the strongest reasons to pursue CPT in a legal role. Many in-house legal teams use CPT as a pipeline for future hires. If the employer is willing to sponsor H-1B visa after graduation, your CPT experience counts toward your qualifications. Confirm the employer's sponsorship history before accepting by searching Migrate Mate for their prior F-1 and H-1B visa filing activity.
Does a Legal Counsel CPT role qualify as a specialty occupation for future H-1B purposes?
Legal Counsel roles typically qualify as a specialty occupation under H-1B standards because they require a J.D. or equivalent legal degree for a specific body of work. Your CPT job description and offer letter become evidence in a future H-1B petition. Make sure the role description explicitly ties the legal work to your degree field, not just general business tasks.
What documents does a legal employer typically need from an F-1 CPT student before the start date?
You'll need your I-20 with the CPT authorization endorsed by your DSO, showing the employer name, role, and authorized dates. The employer will also need your passport and visa, and may run an I-9 verification. Some legal departments ask for proof of malpractice coverage if you'll be advising clients, so confirm what the employer's compliance team requires before your start date.
Can I switch employers mid-CPT if a better Legal Counsel opportunity comes up?
CPT authorization is employer-specific. If you want to switch to a different employer, your DSO must revoke the current CPT and issue a new I-20 authorizing the new employer before you start. Working for an unauthorized employer, even briefly, violates your F-1 status. Start the DSO process as soon as you have a firm offer from the new employer, not after you've already resigned.
