Get Access To All JobsReal Estate Attorney CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does working as a Real Estate Attorney on CPT count toward the 12-month full-time CPT limit that affects OPT eligibility?
Yes. Any full-time CPT authorization that totals 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, including post-completion OPT. Part-time CPT at 20 hours or fewer per week does not count toward that limit. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, structure your CPT as part-time or keep full-time authorizations under 12 cumulative months.
Can an F-1 student on CPT work as a Real Estate Attorney before passing the bar exam?
Yes, but your title and tasks must reflect your unlicensed status. CPT-authorized roles for pre-bar students typically involve legal research, contract review, due diligence, and transactional support under attorney supervision, not independent legal representation. Confirm with your DSO that the job description accurately reflects supervised work, since the I-20 authorization must match your actual duties.
How do I find law firms and real estate companies that accept CPT students for attorney roles?
Migrate Mate shows employers with verified LCA filing history for legal roles, which is a strong proxy for firms that have hired international students before. Real estate-focused law firms, title insurance companies, and corporate legal departments at REITs are the most common CPT placements for JD and LLM students in this area.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my placement changes from a law firm to an in-house legal team mid-semester?
CPT authorization is employer-specific. If you move from one employer to another, even within the same practice area, your DSO must issue a new I-20 with the updated employer name and start date before you begin working. Starting at a new employer without an updated authorization, even briefly, creates an unauthorized employment violation that can affect your status.
Does a Real Estate Attorney CPT role qualify as a specialty occupation for future H-1B purposes?
Real Estate Attorney positions generally meet the specialty occupation standard because they require a JD degree in a specific legal discipline. Your CPT employment itself doesn't create H-1B visa eligibility, but the experience and the employer relationship built during CPT can support a future H-1B petition. USCIS evaluates specialty occupation at the time of the H-1B visa filing, not retroactively based on CPT work history.
