Does a Legal Associate role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your degree curriculum and your school offers CPT for that field of study. Legal research, contract drafting, case support, and compliance work all map cleanly to law-adjacent degree programs. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring the job description to your authorization meeting and confirm the role ties to your specific program.
Can I do CPT at a law firm as an F-1 student if I'm not in law school?
CPT authorization depends on your degree program, not the employer's industry. An F-1 student in a business, public policy, or paralegal studies program can do CPT at a law firm if the Legal Associate work integrates into their curriculum. A law student at a U.S. law school typically uses a different authorization pathway. Confirm with your DSO that your specific program allows CPT in a legal services setting.
How do I explain CPT work authorization to a law firm's hiring team?
Tell the recruiter you're authorized to work through CPT, which is a school-issued work authorization for F-1 students, and that you'll provide a new I-20 with CPT authorization before your start date. Most law firms don't encounter CPT often, so a one-sentence explanation and a copy of your authorized I-20 usually resolves any questions. USCIS defines CPT on its official guidance pages if the employer wants to verify the authorization type.
What documents does a law firm need from me for CPT?
For I-9 verification, you'll provide your CPT-authorized I-20 and your unexpired passport or F-1 visa stamp. The I-20 must list the employer name, job description, and authorization dates that match your role. Some firms also ask for a letter from your DSO confirming enrollment. Prepare these before your first day so HR can complete the I-9 on time.
How do I find Legal Associate jobs that are open to CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Legal Associate roles and filter by employers with visa-sponsorship history. Firms that have filed LCAs or sponsored work visas before are generally more comfortable with F-1 work authorization documentation. Avoid roles where the posting explicitly states 'U.S. citizens only' or 'no visa sponsorship,' as those firms are unlikely to process CPT paperwork even though CPT doesn't require employer sponsorship.
