Does CPT for a counseling psychologist role require a licensed supervisor?
Yes, in nearly every case. State psychology licensing boards require doctoral-level clinical hours to be supervised by a licensed psychologist. Your DSO will typically require the offer letter or training agreement to name a licensed supervisor before authorizing CPT. Without that documentation, the placement may not count toward your degree hours and your DSO cannot approve it.
Can I complete CPT at a private therapy practice rather than a hospital or university?
You can, but private practices are less experienced with F-1 work authorization paperwork. The placement still needs a signed training agreement, a named licensed supervisor, and a clear description of clinical duties tied to your program outcomes. Some private practices are willing once you explain the CPT process, but expect more back-and-forth than with institutional sites.
What happens if my CPT counseling role ends before my authorized end date?
Your CPT authorization is tied to that specific employer. If the placement ends early, you must stop working immediately and notify your DSO. You cannot transfer unused CPT hours to a different employer without a new authorization. If you need a new placement, your DSO issues a fresh CPT endorsement on a new I-20 before you begin.
How do I find counseling psychology employers open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you search counseling and psychology roles filtered by employers with documented sponsorship or work-authorization history, which strongly signals familiarity with F-1 students. University counseling centers, federally qualified health centers, and VA-affiliated training programs are among the most CPT-experienced institutional employers to target.
Does CPT affect my OPT eligibility for counseling psychology jobs after graduation?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, which is a critical planning constraint for counseling psychology students who need OPT to cover the gap between graduation and an H-1B visa start date. Part-time CPT has no effect on OPT. Track your cumulative full-time CPT months carefully with your DSO throughout your program.
