Get Access To All JobsDistrict Attorney CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do District Attorney offices typically authorize CPT for F-1 students?
Many county and state DA offices participate in law school externship programs that are already structured for academic credit, making CPT authorization straightforward. The key is that the office must agree to supervise you in a way that satisfies your school's curriculum requirements, and your DSO must issue the updated I-20 before your first day of work.
Can I do full-time CPT at a DA office during the academic year?
Full-time CPT during the academic year is technically permitted, but you must be enrolled in a corresponding course for the duration. More importantly, any cumulative full-time CPT of 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most F-1 law students limit DA placements to part-time or a single full-time semester to protect their post-graduation OPT.
What documents does a DA office need to hire me on CPT?
The office needs a copy of your current I-20 with the CPT authorization listed, your visa stamp, your I-94 record showing F-1 status, and your EAD if applicable. For E-Verify purposes, government employers will run your documents through the system on your first day. Your DSO-issued CPT I-20 is the controlling document that authorizes employment.
How do I find DA offices that have hired F-1 students before?
Migrate Mate shows F-1 work authorization history by employer type and location, so you can identify government law offices and DA positions that have previously sponsored or authorized international students. This is faster than cold-calling county offices and helps you target placements with established international student pipelines.
Is a DA externship considered integral to my J.D. curriculum for CPT purposes?
It qualifies as integral only if your school formally requires or recognizes it for academic credit in a specific course. A general interest externship with no corresponding course registration doesn't meet the CPT standard under SEVP rules. Check with your DSO early in the semester to confirm the DA placement maps to an approved course before you commit to a start date.
