Does a Tax Attorney role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your J.D. curriculum and your school approves it. The role must involve substantive legal work, such as tax research, drafting client advisories, or supporting litigation under attorney supervision. Your DSO reviews the offer letter and job description to confirm the curriculum connection before issuing CPT authorization.
Can I do CPT at a law firm and a corporate legal department in the same semester?
Only if your school authorizes each employer separately on your I-20. CPT is employer-specific, so a new authorization is required for each position. Most schools limit students to one CPT employer per authorization period. Confirm your school's policy with your DSO before accepting multiple offers, as unauthorized employment violates F-1 status.
What documents does a law firm need from me to complete CPT onboarding?
You'll need your current I-20 showing CPT authorization for that specific employer, your passport, and your F-1 visa stamp. The employer must complete Form I-9 and verify your CPT authorization dates match the employment period. Some law firms enrolled in E-Verify will run an electronic check, which is straightforward when your I-20 reflects the correct start date.
Will CPT at a law firm affect my future H-1B eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates OPT eligibility, which is the most common path to H-1B visa sponsorship. Part-time CPT, or full-time CPT under 12 months, does not affect OPT. Most law students use part-time CPT during the semester and reserve full-time for one summer, keeping their OPT intact for post-graduation sponsorship.
How do I find law firms and tax departments that hire CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers in legal and tax advisory roles who have hired F-1 students. Targeting firms with established recruiting programs at your law school is also effective, as they're already familiar with CPT paperwork. Big Four accounting firms with legal practices and mid-size regional law firms with dedicated tax groups are common CPT employers.
