Get Access To All JobsPractice Assistant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Practice Assistant role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the job duties connect directly to your academic program. Practice Assistant roles span legal, clinical, and administrative settings, so your DSO will evaluate the specific job description, not just the title. A general office assistant role won't qualify, but a practice assistant supporting patient coordination in a healthcare program context typically will.
Can I do CPT as a Practice Assistant while taking fewer than 12 credits?
CPT requires you to maintain full-time enrollment, which for most F-1 students means at least 12 credit hours per semester. If your program allows CPT as a registered co-op or internship course, that credit may count toward your full-time load. Confirm the specific enrollment requirement with your DSO before reducing credits.
How do I find Practice Assistant jobs that are open to CPT students?
Many employers don't advertise CPT eligibility in job postings, so you'll need to ask directly during the application or interview process. Migrate Mate lists Practice Assistant roles from employers with F-1 authorization experience, making it easier to identify which opportunities are realistically open to CPT students without cold-emailing HR teams.
What happens if my Practice Assistant CPT role ends before the semester does?
Your CPT authorization is tied to the specific employer, dates, and hours listed on your I-20. If the job ends early, your CPT authorization ends with it. You can't transfer the authorization to a different employer or role mid-semester. Contact your DSO immediately if the role terminates early so your SEVIS record stays accurate.
Does part-time CPT as a Practice Assistant affect my post-graduation work options?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count toward the one-year full-time CPT threshold that eliminates OPT eligibility. You can complete multiple semesters of part-time Practice Assistant CPT and still use your full 12-month OPT plus a potential 24-month STEM OPT extension after graduating, as long as your total full-time CPT stays under 12 months.
