Does a Program Assistant role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on how the role connects to your degree. CPT requires the position to be an integral part of your curriculum, not just broadly related to your field. A Program Assistant role at a research center, public health agency, or education nonprofit typically qualifies for students in public administration, social work, or management programs. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your I-20 and academic plan.
Can I do part-time CPT as a Program Assistant while still taking classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility, no matter how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT at 20 or more hours per week for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so confirm your weekly hours with your DSO before accepting a Program Assistant offer that might expand over time.
What documents does my employer need to start my CPT Program Assistant job?
Your employer needs your updated I-20 showing CPT authorization for the specific employer and dates, your valid F-1 visa stamp, and your passport. They'll complete Form I-9 on or before your first day using these documents. Some employers also request your SEVIS ID number for their HR records. Don't start work before your CPT start date is printed on your I-20, even if HR asks you to come in early.
How do I find Program Assistant jobs that accept CPT students?
Many employers post Program Assistant roles without explicitly stating they accept CPT, so you often have to ask directly during the application process. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with F-1 hiring history, which narrows your search to organizations already familiar with work authorization documentation. Focus outreach on nonprofits, public-sector contractors, and research institutions, which tend to have established processes for onboarding international students.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my Program Assistant role changes significantly?
If your job title, employer, location, or weekly hours change materially, your existing CPT authorization may no longer be valid. You'll need to return to your DSO for an I-20 update before the change takes effect. This is especially common when Program Assistant internships convert to different departments or when remote arrangements shift to a new physical worksite outside the original authorization.
