Get Access To All JobsRecreation Assistant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Recreation Assistant role qualify for CPT?
It depends on your specific degree program and how the job duties connect to your coursework. Kinesiology, sport management, recreation administration, and public health programs commonly satisfy the integral curriculum requirement. Your DSO reviews the connection between the role's actual duties, activity planning, participant supervision, facility coordination, and your enrolled courses before authorizing CPT. A generic recreation job with no academic tie won't qualify.
Can I work part-time as a Recreation Assistant on CPT while taking classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT is authorized for 20 hours or fewer per week and doesn't count against your 12-month full-time CPT limit, which matters for future OPT eligibility. Many campus rec departments and community recreation programs offer part-time scheduling that fits alongside a full course load. Confirm the exact hours with your DSO before accepting the offer, since the authorized hours must be reflected on your updated I-20.
What documents do I need to start a CPT Recreation Assistant job?
You need an updated I-20 with the CPT authorization section completed, showing your employer's name, job location, authorized dates, and part-time or full-time designation. Your employer will also need your SEVIS-linked I-20 for E-Verify onboarding. Bring your passport, current I-20, and any offer letter to your DSO appointment. Don't start work until the new I-20 is in your hands.
How do I find Recreation Assistant employers who understand CPT?
Search Recreation Assistant listings on Migrate Mate, where you can identify employers with work authorization hiring experience. Campus recreation departments at universities are often the most CPT-familiar since they regularly hire F-1 students and have HR staff who know how to process I-20 documentation. Municipal parks and recreation departments vary widely, so ask the hiring manager early whether they've onboarded CPT students before.
Does full-time CPT as a Recreation Assistant affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT, more than 20 hours per week, counts toward a 12-month cumulative limit. If you use 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your program, you lose OPT eligibility entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT carries no such cap. If you're considering a full-time summer recreation position, calculate your running full-time CPT total with your DSO before accepting.
