Get Access To All JobsBusiness Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Business Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position is an integral part of your enrolled degree program. Business Manager roles in operations, strategy, finance, or organizational leadership typically connect to business and management curricula. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how the role maps to your specific program's learning objectives, so get that documentation from your employer before approaching your DSO.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Business Manager and still use OPT later?
Only if your cumulative full-time CPT across all employers stays under 12 months. Once you hit 12 months of full-time CPT, you lose OPT eligibility permanently, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not affect OPT. If you're planning an H-1B visa path after graduation, protecting your OPT is worth factoring into how you structure your CPT arrangement.
What documentation do I need from my employer to authorize CPT?
Your DSO typically requires a written offer letter that includes your start date, employer name and address, weekly hours, and a description of your duties as a Business Manager. The duties must connect clearly to your coursework. Some schools also require a learning agreement or a faculty supervisor signature confirming the academic relevance of the position before CPT is approved.
How do I find Business Manager jobs where employers understand CPT?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces Business Manager roles from employers with documented LCA filing history. Employers who have previously hired international students through formal work authorization processes are more likely to have HR teams that can process CPT paperwork correctly and won't rescind offers due to unfamiliarity with F-1 requirements.
Can my CPT Business Manager role count toward H-1B specialty occupation later?
It can, if the role required a bachelor's degree in a directly related field throughout the CPT period. Documenting the specialty occupation connection from the start, including the educational requirement in the offer letter and keeping records of your job duties, makes it easier to establish the same role's H-1B eligibility when your employer files with USCIS after graduation.
