Get Access To All JobsSite Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Site Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT eligibility depends on your specific program and school, not just the job title. Site Manager roles typically qualify when your curriculum includes construction management, civil engineering, or project management coursework that the job directly supports. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring the full job description to your authorization meeting rather than relying on the title alone.
Can I work on active construction sites during CPT?
Yes, CPT does not restrict your physical work location as long as the employer is your authorized CPT sponsor and the role aligns with your academic program. Site-based work including field inspections, subcontractor coordination, and safety walk-throughs all count as long as your I-20 lists the correct employer. Confirm your authorization reflects the actual worksite if you rotate between job sites for the same employer.
How do I find Site Manager employers who understand CPT?
Use Migrate Mate to search for construction and facilities management companies that have sponsored or employed F-1 students before. Employers familiar with work authorization documents process CPT EADs faster and are less likely to withdraw offers due to unfamiliarity with the I-20 authorization process. General contractors with federal contracts are a reliable starting point since E-Verify compliance means they already handle I-9 verification routinely.
Does full-time CPT as a Site Manager affect my OPT eligibility?
Using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, which is 20 hours per week or fewer, does not count toward that limit regardless of how many semesters you use it. If you plan to use CPT for a full-time summer internship plus a part-time semester role, count your full-time weeks carefully before authorizing a longer engagement.
What documentation do I need to start a Site Manager CPT job?
You need a new or updated I-20 with CPT authorization listing your employer name, job location, and authorized date range, plus your valid F-1 visa and a current I-94 showing lawful status. Your employer will verify these on Form I-9 on or before your first day of work. Some construction employers also require a copy of your EAD if your school issues one, though CPT authorization on the I-20 alone is legally sufficient under federal regulations.
