Does a Manufacturing Operator role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role is directly tied to your academic program and your school lists it as an integral part of your curriculum. Industrial engineering, manufacturing technology, and operations management programs commonly authorize production operator internships. Your DSO reviews the job description against your program requirements, so bring the offer letter and a position description when you request authorization.
Can I work full-time as a Manufacturing Operator on CPT?
Full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, is allowed but carries a significant consequence: 12 months of full-time CPT use disqualifies you from OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, does not affect OPT eligibility. Most F-1 students in Manufacturing Operator roles choose part-time CPT during the academic year to protect their post-graduation OPT.
What documents does my employer need when I start a CPT job?
Your employer completes an I-9 using your valid passport, unexpired F-1 visa stamp, and your I-20 showing the CPT authorization with the correct employer name, start date, and end date. The CPT authorization on your I-20 serves as your employment authorization document for I-9 purposes, so no separate EAD is required for CPT positions.
How do I find Manufacturing Operator roles that accept CPT students?
Browse Manufacturing Operator listings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with work authorization filing history. When reaching out, reference your CPT authorization directly in your application cover and confirm the employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Many mid-size manufacturers are unfamiliar with F-1 CPT, so providing a one-page explainer alongside your application can remove friction from the hiring process.
What happens if my CPT end date passes before the job ends?
You must stop working on the CPT end date listed on your I-20. Continuing without an updated authorization puts your F-1 status at risk. If the role extends, return to your DSO before the current authorization expires and request an updated I-20 reflecting the new end date. Plan for at least two weeks of processing time at your school's international student office.
