Get Access To All JobsDirector Of Research Operations CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Director of Research Operations role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your degree program includes research administration, project management, or science policy coursework and your DSO certifies the role as integral to your curriculum. The title alone doesn't guarantee CPT eligibility, the connection between the job duties and your academic program is what USCIS and your school evaluate. Bring the job description to your DSO meeting.
What academic programs typically support CPT for this role?
Graduate programs in public health, biomedical science, clinical research administration, higher education management, and science policy most commonly support CPT for research operations roles. Some MPH, MS, and MBA programs with research management tracks also qualify. The key is whether your program includes coursework that directly maps to coordinating research compliance, grant oversight, or lab operations.
How do I find employers who have hired F-1 students for these roles before?
Migrate Mate lets you browse Director of Research Operations positions filtered by employers with work authorization filing history. Starting with organizations that have already navigated F-1 onboarding reduces the risk of losing an offer because HR doesn't know how to process CPT paperwork. Universities, hospital systems, and government-funded research institutes are the most consistent category.
Can I do part-time CPT for a research operations role while finishing my degree?
Yes. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Many research operations roles offer part-time or project-based arrangements, so clarify the weekly hour commitment before your DSO submits authorization.
What documents does my employer need to process my CPT authorization?
Your employer needs to provide a formal offer letter with start date, job title, work location, and weekly hours. Your school will also require confirmation that the employer understands you can't begin work before the CPT authorization date on your I-20. Some research institutions additionally request a brief description of how the role supports your academic training, which their HR or research compliance office typically drafts.
