Does working in the OR as an F-1 CPT student count toward post-graduation OPT hours?
Full-time CPT used for 12 or more months makes you ineligible for OPT after graduation. Part-time CPT, meaning fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't affect OPT eligibility regardless of duration. Most OR clinical rotations are structured as full-time placements, so clarify the weekly hour commitment with your DSO and employer before accepting the offer.
Can an F-1 student work in an OR on CPT without a full RN license?
It depends on the role. Student nurse extern or graduate nurse positions may allow you to practice under supervision before licensure, but circulating RN or scrub RN roles require an active state license. Confirm with the facility's HR and your state nursing board whether your authorization level matches the posted OR position before your DSO submits the CPT request.
How do I find Registered Nurse Operating Room employers who accept CPT students?
Migrate Mate lists OR nursing roles filtered by work authorization type, so you can identify employers who have engaged with F-1 CPT placements before. Focus on Level I and Level II trauma centers, large academic medical systems, and ambulatory surgical centers with active residency or new-grad programs, since they're most likely to have established CPT onboarding processes.
What documents does an OR employer need from me to process CPT employment?
You'll need your current I-20 with the CPT authorization page listing the specific employer, start date, and end date; your passport; your F-1 visa stamp; and your I-94 arrival record. The employer uses these for I-9 completion. Some hospital HR departments also request a letter from your DSO confirming the role satisfies your curriculum requirement.
Can I do CPT at a surgery center that isn't affiliated with my school?
Yes, as long as your DSO determines the role is an integral part of your curriculum and authorizes it on your I-20. Non-affiliated sites are common for OR placements because most schools don't own surgical facilities. What matters is that the job description maps to your coursework and that your DSO issues the authorization before your employment start date, not whether the site has a formal school partnership.
