Does a sewing job qualify for CPT authorization?
A sewing position qualifies for CPT if your school recognizes hands-on production work as an integral part of your curriculum. Programs in fashion design, apparel production, or textile arts typically meet this standard. Your DSO reviews the job description and confirms the curricular connection before issuing authorization. A general retail or stocking role at a clothing store would not qualify.
Can I work as a freelance seamstress or tailor on CPT?
CPT requires a formal employer-employee relationship with a specific company or individual, not self-directed freelance work. A steady contract arrangement with a costume house, alterations shop, or apparel brand can qualify if the employer can document your role, your hours, and a fixed work location. Your DSO must still authorize each engagement separately.
How do I find employers who hire F-1 students for sewing roles?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with a documented history of hiring F-1 students in production and apparel roles. Focus your search on apparel manufacturers, theatrical costume departments, bridal ateliers, and sample rooms at fashion brands, as these operations regularly bring on trained sewing staff and are familiar with work authorization documentation requirements.
What documents does my employer need to verify my CPT authorization?
Your employer needs your I-20 with the CPT authorization printed on page two, listing the employer name, position, start date, and whether the authorization is part-time or full-time. They'll also need your valid passport and F-1 visa. Employers enrolled in E-Verify will run an electronic verification using this documentation before your first day.
Does CPT for a sewing role affect my STEM OPT eligibility later?
Standard sewing and tailoring roles are not classified under STEM-designated degree programs, so STEM OPT is unlikely to apply regardless of CPT usage. However, full-time CPT of 12 or more cumulative months does eliminate standard OPT eligibility entirely. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, keep each CPT authorization part-time and track your total authorized hours carefully.
