Mission Summary:
At Motional, we're transforming how autonomous vehicles discover critical intelligence hidden within petabytes of multimodal sensor data. Our next-generation autonomous driving stack depends on finding the rare edge cases, long-tail scenarios, and model errors that matter most. Omnitag, our ML-powered multimodal data mining framework, along with our Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and triage products, form the core platform that powers this discovery and enables external customers to diagnose and resolve complex driving scenarios.
As a Senior Full Stack Engineer on the Data Mining team, you will serve as the technical anchor for our user-facing products, architecting the UI excellence and control plane services that power exploration across petabytes of data. You will build and scale high-performance APIs and intuitive interfaces that deliver visualization, telemetry, and data mining directly to enterprise users. Partnering closely with UX designers, ML engineers, and core platform teams, you will champion front-end best practices, establish bulletproof testing patterns, and ensure every production release delivers a flawless user experience.
What You'll Do:
- Drive Front-End & UI Excellence: Serve as the technical anchor for customer-facing applications, setting standards for state management, component modularity, and performance using React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
- Bridge UX & Production: Partner closely with UX/UI designers to translate complex workflows and design systems into responsive, performant web interfaces, interactive data visualizations, and telemetry tools.
- Architect Control Plane APIs: Build and scale low-latency REST and gRPC microservices in Python and Node.js/TypeScript to efficiently manage and retrieve massive multimodal query payloads.
- Guarantee Reliability & CI/CD: Establish robust testing strategies (unit, integration, and E2E automation) and CI/CD pipelines to ensure flawless releases and prevent UI/UX regressions across client deployments.
- Cross-Functional Integration: Collaborate with ML researchers, data mining engineers, and platform teams to translate cutting-edge data curation and triage needs into intuitive product features.
- Mentorship & Communication: Mentor engineers on full-stack best practices while clearly articulating architectural strategies to both technical peers and stakeholders.
What We're Looking For (Must-Haves):
- BS/MS in Computer Science or a related field, with 6+ years of professional full-stack software engineering experience building and scaling production web applications.
- Proven track record in modern front-end frameworks (React, Next.js, TypeScript) paired with strong backend development in Python and Node.js to design and operate high-performance REST and gRPC services.
- Practical experience designing high-performance APIs and managing cloud infrastructure using AWS (EKS, Lambda) and AWS CDK (TypeScript) or Terraform.
- Demonstrated experience establishing automated testing pipelines (e.g., Cypress, Playwright) and maturing CI/CD practices to safeguard user experience across deployments.
- Track record of collaborating with UX designers, ML engineers, and data teams to transform complex technical domain needs into intuitive tools.
Bonus Points (Nice-to-Haves):
- Prior experience in autonomous vehicles (AV), robotics, or real-time spatial/sensor data applications.
- Product design sensibilities or direct UI/UX experience.
- Familiarity with 3D visualization, Canvas/WebGL, or 3D math/linear algebra fundamentals for handling sensor data viewers.
- Background in internal developer tooling, log ingestion, telemetry viewers, or data annotation systems.
We encourage a hybrid schedule with in-office time at one of our locations in Boston, Pittsburgh, or Las Vegas to support collaboration, or this role can be fully remote.

Data Engineer Jobs in Pittsburgh: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a data engineer job in Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh data engineer roles concentrate in healthcare systems, financial services firms, and the robotics and autonomous technology companies anchored around Oakland and the Strip District. Candidates who combine cloud data platform experience with domain knowledge in healthcare IT or fintech stand out in this market. Targeting mid-size technology companies and university-affiliated research organizations alongside large employers also opens more entry points than a national job search typically would.
Which companies hire data engineers in Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh data engineer roles are posted by PNC Financial Services, Google, and Motional and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. The local market draws from a wide range of employer types, including regional health networks, financial technology firms, and the growing autonomous vehicle and robotics sector that has made Pittsburgh a recognized technology hub.
Are there remote data engineer jobs in Pittsburgh?
Yes, data engineering is one of the more remote-compatible technical disciplines because the core work, building and maintaining pipelines, is largely desk-based and cloud-hosted. About 28% of data engineer openings tied to Pittsburgh are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how broadly distributed these teams have become. Pipeline development and analytics engineering roles tend to offer the most flexibility, while roles tied to on-site infrastructure or embedded research teams are more likely to require in-person presence.
How can I get a data engineer job in Pittsburgh with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Pittsburgh is through a data analyst or junior analytics engineer role at one of the city's health systems or fintech companies, where strong SQL skills and a portfolio of personal or academic projects carry real weight with hiring managers. Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh produce a steady pipeline of graduates, so employers here are comfortable with candidates who supplement limited work experience with coursework or research projects. Targeting contract or project-based roles at Pittsburgh-area consulting firms is another practical way to build a local professional record quickly.
Which industries hire the most data engineers in Pittsburgh?
Most data engineer openings in Pittsburgh sit in Technology & Software and Banking & Financial Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pittsburgh's concentration of major health networks, its legacy in financial services, and the sustained growth of its autonomous systems and robotics sector all drive consistent demand for data infrastructure talent across the city.
