Data Management Specialist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data management specialist in New York?
Most employers in New York hire data management specialists with a bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science, or business analytics, though some roles accept equivalent work experience. There is no state-issued license for this role in New York. Candidates strengthen their candidacy by earning vendor-neutral credentials such as the Certified Data Management Professional designation or platform certifications from providers like Microsoft or AWS, which are widely recognized by New York's financial services and healthcare employers.
How much do data management specialists make in New York?
Data management specialists in New York earn a median of about $105,900 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,090 for the lowest 10% to over $178,580 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data management specialists in New York?
Employers hiring data management specialists in New York right now include Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and BlackRock, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, large hospital systems, and global media companies means demand is distributed broadly across industry sectors rather than clustering in a single employer type.
Which New York cities have the most data management specialist jobs?
New York, Brooklyn, and Buffalo have the most data management specialist openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its density of global financial firms, hospital networks, and tech companies, while Albany draws openings from state government agencies and healthcare organizations, and Buffalo's growing presence of professional services firms and regional banks supports consistent demand outside the city.
Are there remote data management specialist jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 31% of data management specialist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the desk-based and analytical nature of the work. The tasks most commonly performed remotely include data governance documentation, database monitoring, metadata management, and reporting work that requires no physical access to on-site infrastructure.
How can I get hired as a data management specialist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior data analyst or data coordinator role, which large New York employers such as hospital systems, state agencies, and financial firms use as a feeder into data management functions. Many of these organizations run rotational technology programs or hire recent graduates into structured associate tracks. A strong portfolio demonstrating SQL proficiency, a data cleaning project, or an entry-level certification gives candidates a concrete edge when applying through these programs.
