Data Platform Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data platform engineer in Virginia?
Virginia has no state-issued license or registration specific to data platform engineering, so entry depends on education and demonstrated technical skill. Most employers in the state expect at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or engineering. Cloud provider certifications from AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud are widely recognized by Virginia hiring managers and can accelerate a job search. Building a portfolio of pipeline or data warehouse projects strengthens candidacy alongside any formal degree.
How much do data platform engineers make in Virginia?
Data platform engineers in Virginia earn a median of about $160,360 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $105,210 for the lowest 10% to over $210,160 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data platform engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring data platform engineers in Virginia right now include Capital One, Umbra, and Booz Allen Hamilton, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal contractors and large financial services firms means data platform engineering roles here frequently involve government cloud environments, compliance-sensitive data infrastructure, or high-volume transaction processing.
Which Virginia cities have the most data platform engineer jobs?
McLean, Arlington, and Falls Church account for the largest share of data platform engineer openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia anchors most of the volume because of its dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and cloud hyperscaler campuses, while Richmond draws demand from financial services and state government technology offices, and Hampton Roads benefits from military and naval technology contracts.
Are there remote data platform engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 55% of data platform engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how naturally the work translates to distributed teams. Pipeline development, data modeling, and cloud infrastructure work are the parts of the role most likely to be offered remotely, though positions involving classified federal systems or on-site data center access typically require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a data platform engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a data engineering associate or junior data analyst role at one of Virginia's large technology contractors or financial institutions, then building toward platform work from there. Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos run new-graduate associate programs in Northern Virginia that place candidates without deep experience into data and cloud teams. Adjacent roles like business intelligence developer, data analyst, or cloud infrastructure support are common stepping stones. An Azure or AWS cloud practitioner certification plus a GitHub portfolio of pipeline projects gives entry-level candidates a concrete advantage with Virginia hiring managers.
