Data Science Lead Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data science lead in Massachusetts?
There is no state-issued license required to work as a data science lead in Massachusetts. Most employers expect a master's degree or higher in data science, statistics, applied mathematics, or computer science, with several years of hands-on modeling experience before moving into a leadership role. Massachusetts has a dense graduate-program ecosystem at institutions like MIT, Harvard, and Northeastern, and completing advanced coursework or a capstone project in a domain relevant to life sciences or fintech gives candidates a concrete edge in the local market.
How much do data science leads make in Massachusetts?
Data science leads in Massachusetts earn a median of about $131,750 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $81,030 for the lowest 10% to over $206,220 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data science leads in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring data science leads in Massachusetts right now include Collegium Pharmaceutical, XPO, and Novartis, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's concentration of biotech, asset management, and enterprise software firms means openings are consistently distributed across multiple industries rather than being tied to a single sector.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most data science lead jobs?
Boston, Cambridge, and Waltham are the Massachusetts cities with the most data science lead openings right now. Boston and Cambridge dominate because of the density of hospitals, universities, and financial institutions headquartered there, while suburban Route 128 corridor hubs like Waltham and Burlington draw significant volume from the technology and pharmaceutical employers concentrated along that corridor.
Are there remote data science lead jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 50% of data science lead openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the core work involves modeling, code review, and stakeholder presentations that translate naturally to distributed settings. The portions of the role most amenable to full remote work are individual contributor modeling tasks, while team mentorship and cross-functional strategy sessions are more likely to require periodic in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a data science lead in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving laterally from a senior data scientist or machine learning engineer role into an informal team lead position at a Massachusetts employer. Biogen, Liberty Mutual, and several Boston-area health systems regularly post associate data scientist and data analyst roles designed for candidates early in their careers, and strong performance in those positions leads to lead-level responsibilities within a few years. Building a public portfolio of end-to-end machine learning projects, particularly in biomedical data or financial modeling given Massachusetts's industry mix, makes a candidate noticeably stronger in a competitive applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to data science lead jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to data science lead jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current Massachusetts openings updated in real time. Find roles that fit your experience and apply directly to each one without needing to create a profile or sign up first.
