Data Science Lead Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data science lead in New Jersey?
Data science lead roles in New Jersey do not require a state-issued license or certification, so the path runs through education and experience. Most employers in New Jersey expect a bachelor's degree in a quantitative field, with many preferring a master's, particularly in the pharma and financial services sectors that dominate the state. Candidates typically move into lead roles after several years as senior individual contributors, often within New Jersey's life sciences or fintech companies.
How much do data science leads make in New Jersey?
Data science leads in New Jersey earn a median of about $135,280 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,720 for the lowest 10% to over $203,950 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data science leads in New Jersey?
Employers hiring data science leads in New Jersey right now include Rutgers University, ADP, and BNY, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New Jersey's concentration of pharmaceutical headquarters, insurance carriers, and global consulting firms means demand is steady across both large enterprises and specialized analytics teams.
Which New Jersey cities have the most data science lead jobs?
The cities with the most data science lead openings in New Jersey are New Jersey, Princeton, and Piscataway. This distribution reflects the state's major employment clusters: Jersey City and Newark benefit from proximity to New York financial firms and large tech campuses, while the Princeton and Parsippany areas draw hiring from pharmaceutical headquarters, global consulting offices, and insurance companies with deep analytics operations.
Are there remote data science lead jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 83% of data science lead openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, which reflects how well the role translates to distributed work. The most fully remote positions tend to be in modeling, research, and analytics strategy, while roles requiring close collaboration with lab or operations teams in New Jersey's pharma sector are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a data science lead in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is building toward a senior individual contributor role first, then moving into a lead position. New Jersey's pharmaceutical companies, including those along the Route 1 corridor, frequently hire data analysts and associate data scientists as entry points, and several large financial services employers in Newark and Jersey City run rotational analytics programs for new graduates. Building a portfolio in clinical data, risk modeling, or NLP, which are the specialties most in demand in New Jersey, and earning a cloud certification from AWS or Google strengthens a candidate's case considerably.
