Data Science Manager Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data science manager in Illinois?
Data science managers in Illinois are not required to hold a state-issued license, so the path centers on education and demonstrated leadership experience. Most Illinois employers expect a bachelor's degree in a quantitative field, with a master's or MBA viewed favorably in finance and healthcare hiring. Building experience as an individual contributor data scientist or analyst at Illinois-based firms, then moving into a team lead or principal role, is the most common internal promotion path before reaching a manager title.
Which companies hire data science managers in Illinois?
Employers hiring data science managers in Illinois right now include University of Illinois, NORC at the University of Chicago, and Chamberlain, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters in finance, insurance, and retail means demand is consistent throughout the year rather than seasonal.
Which Illinois cities have the most data science manager jobs?
Chicago, Oak Brook, and Riverwoods have the most data science manager openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the largest share of listings because of its density of financial institutions, insurers, and tech-forward retailers headquartered there, while suburban locations like Deerfield and Schaumburg appear regularly because large corporations such as Walgreens Boots Alliance and Motorola Solutions operate major campuses outside the city.
Are there remote data science manager jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 85% of data science manager openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves code, dashboards, and virtual collaboration rather than on-site presence. The parts of the role most frequently offered remotely are individual analysis, modeling work, and one-on-one mentoring, while team planning and stakeholder presentations often require at least occasional in-person attendance.
How can I get hired as a data science manager in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is targeting a senior data scientist or lead analyst role first, building a record of informal leadership before applying for a manager title. Illinois employers like Discover Financial Services and Northwestern Mutual run rotational analytics programs that give early-career candidates exposure to multiple teams and a clearer route to management. A strong GitHub portfolio, published Kaggle competition results, or contributions to an open-source ML project can substitute for years of corporate experience when competing for associate or lead positions that feed into management tracks.
Where can I find and apply to data science manager jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to data science manager jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings updated regularly. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
