Data Scientist Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data scientist in South Dakota?
Data science does not require a state-issued license in South Dakota, so the path centers on education and demonstrated skills. Most employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in a quantitative field such as statistics, computer science, or mathematics, with a master's degree preferred for senior roles. Building a portfolio of projects, earning vendor certifications in cloud or machine learning platforms, and targeting entry-level analyst positions at South Dakota's healthcare systems or financial institutions are the most direct routes.
How much do data scientists make in South Dakota?
Data scientists in South Dakota earn a median of about $96,150 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $67,510 for the lowest 10% to over $145,510 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data scientists in South Dakota?
Employers hiring data scientists in South Dakota right now include Sanford Health, Avera Health, and Sioux Center Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's concentration of large healthcare networks and regional financial firms means many openings sit within analytics, operations, and population health teams.
Which South Dakota cities have the most data scientist jobs?
Sioux Falls, Canton, and Pierre account for the most data scientist openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls dominates because it is home to the state's largest healthcare employers, major bank processing centers, and the bulk of corporate headquarters, while Rapid City contributes a secondary market driven by regional health systems, state agencies, and technology-adjacent firms serving the western part of the state.
Are there remote data scientist jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 0% of data scientist openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based, analytical nature of the work. Roles focused on modeling, reporting, and machine learning pipeline development are the most likely to offer fully remote arrangements, while positions requiring close collaboration with clinical or operational teams in Sioux Falls typically require at least partial on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a data scientist in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is targeting data analyst or business intelligence analyst roles at South Dakota's large healthcare employers such as Sanford Health or Monument Health, which regularly bring on junior analysts who grow into data science functions. Building a portfolio of projects using publicly available datasets, completing a graduate certificate in data science or machine learning, and applying to rotational analytics programs at financial institutions in Sioux Falls can all bridge the experience gap without a prior data science title.
Where can I find and apply to data scientist jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to data scientist jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and location, and apply directly through each listing.
