Database Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a database engineer in New York?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related discipline is the standard entry point for database engineer roles in New York. No state-issued license is required for the role itself, but employers across New York's finance, healthcare, and technology sectors consistently expect hands-on database experience and vendor certifications such as Oracle Database or Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator. Building a portfolio of real database projects strengthens candidacy significantly.
How much do database engineers make in New York?
Database engineers in New York earn a median of about $105,900 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,090 for the lowest 10% to over $178,580 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire database engineers in New York?
Employers hiring database engineers in New York right now include Arch, Gusto, and Citi, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of major financial institutions, hospital networks, and technology firms means openings appear across a wide range of industries and company sizes throughout the state.
Which New York cities have the most database engineer jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and Manhattan have the most database engineer openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its density of Wall Street firms, media companies, and healthcare systems that run large and complex data environments, while Albany's volume reflects the state government's substantial IT infrastructure and the university research institutions anchored there.
Are there remote database engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 30% of database engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the core work of schema design, query optimization, and cloud database administration translates to distributed teams. Database performance monitoring and cloud migration work tend to be the most consistently remote-friendly parts of the role.
How can I get hired as a database engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior database administrator or data analyst role, both of which appear regularly at New York's large financial institutions and hospital systems and provide direct exposure to production database environments. New York employers like NYC Health and Hospitals and state agencies under the Office of Information Technology Services run associate-level IT programs that accept candidates without deep experience. A completed personal database project, an Oracle or Microsoft certification, or a transition from a SQL-heavy data analyst position all help establish credibility for a first database engineering role.
Where can I find and apply to database engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to database engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
