Cybersecurity Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cybersecurity engineer in New York?
New York does not require a state-issued license specific to cybersecurity engineering, so the path runs through education and recognized industry credentials. Most employers expect a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, computer science, or information systems, paired with certifications like CISSP, CompTIA Security+, or Certified Ethical Hacker. Candidates who build hands-on experience through labs, capture-the-flag competitions, or internships at New York financial institutions or healthcare networks tend to move through hiring pipelines fastest.
How much do cybersecurity engineers make in New York?
Cybersecurity engineers in New York earn a median of about $134,660 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,110 for the lowest 10% to over $216,220 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cybersecurity engineers in New York?
Employers hiring cybersecurity engineers in New York right now include Bloomberg, Anthropic, and New York Life, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense concentration of financial institutions, major hospital systems, and federal contractors means the employer pool is unusually broad and consistently active throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most cybersecurity engineer jobs?
New York, New York City, and Bronx account for the greatest concentration of cybersecurity engineer openings in New York. New York City drives the bulk of demand through Wall Street firms, global media companies, and large healthcare networks, while Albany's government agencies and defense contractors and Buffalo's growing technology and financial services sectors support a steady volume of openings outside the metro.
Are there remote cybersecurity engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most technical fields, since cybersecurity engineering is largely analytical and systems-based work that does not require physical presence. About 38% of cybersecurity engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly distributed security teams have become. Cloud security, threat intelligence, and security architecture roles tend to carry the most remote flexibility, while roles tied to on-premises infrastructure or regulated financial environments more often require some in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a cybersecurity engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a security analyst or IT support role at a large New York employer, which gives structured exposure to the tooling and workflows cybersecurity engineers use daily. Hospital networks affiliated with institutions like NewYork-Presbyterian or NYC Health and Hospitals, and financial firms with formal technology analyst programs, regularly bring in candidates without deep experience and develop them internally. A CompTIA Security+ certification and a documented home lab or capture-the-flag portfolio meaningfully offset a thin resume in New York's competitive market.
Where can I find and apply to cybersecurity engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to cybersecurity engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and target location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
