Dental Assistant Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a dental assistant in Maine?
Dental assistants in Maine who perform radiographic procedures must obtain a Dental Radiographer credential issued by the Maine Board of Dental Examiners, which requires completing an approved radiology course and passing a competency examination. A formal dental assisting program from an accredited institution is the most common path to employment, though some practices hire entry-level candidates and provide on-the-job training for non-radiographic duties alongside the required credentialing.
Which companies hire dental assistants in Maine?
Employers hiring dental assistants in Maine right now include Maine Dental, Aspen Dental, and Penobscot Community Health Care, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maine's mix of private group practices, community health centers, and federally qualified health centers means hiring is distributed across both metro and rural areas throughout the state.
Which Maine cities have the most dental assistant jobs?
Portland, Auburn, and Bangor have the most dental assistant openings in Maine. Portland drives the largest share of listings as the state's most populous metro and home to the greatest concentration of group dental practices and health system-affiliated clinics, while Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn generate consistent openings anchored by regional health systems and established community dental programs serving central and western Maine populations.
Are there remote dental assistant jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they're rare. Dental assisting is a hands-on chairside role that requires physical presence with patients and equipment, making true remote work uncommon in the field. About 0% of dental assistant openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions typically involve administrative or care coordination duties rather than clinical assisting work.
How can I get hired as a dental assistant in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an accredited dental assisting program and obtaining your Maine Dental Radiographer credential, then applying to community health centers and federally qualified health centers in Maine, which more routinely hire new graduates than private practices. Candidates who have worked as dental receptionists, sterilization technicians, or medical assistants have an advantage, as those roles demonstrate clinical environment familiarity. Earning a Certified Dental Assistant credential through the Dental Assisting National Board also strengthens an application considerably for candidates without a long employment history.
Where can I find and apply to dental assistant jobs in Maine?
You can find and apply to dental assistant jobs in Maine on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your credentials and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
