Dental Assistant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a dental assistant in New York?
New York does not require a separate state license for general dental assisting, but dental assistants who take X-rays must complete an approved radiography course and obtain certification from the New York State Department of Health before performing that duty independently. Most employers expect a dental assisting diploma or associate degree from a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, and earning the Certified Dental Assistant credential from the Dental Assisting National Board strengthens any application in the New York market.
How much do dental assistants make in New York?
Dental assistants in New York earn a median of about $48,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $36,410 for the lowest 10% to over $60,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire dental assistants in New York?
Employers hiring dental assistants in New York right now include Aspen Dental, Sun River Health, and NYU Langone Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense mix of private group practices, federally qualified health centers, and hospital-affiliated dental clinics means openings appear across a wide range of employer types throughout the state.
Which New York cities have the most dental assistant jobs?
The cities with the most dental assistant openings in New York are New York, Brooklyn, and Albany. New York City leads by a wide margin because of its sheer population and the concentration of large hospital systems, specialty group practices, and community health organizations, while cities like Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand from regional health networks and academic dental clinics that serve large surrounding populations.
Are there remote dental assistant jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Dental assisting is a hands-on, chairside role that cannot be performed remotely in most cases. About 2% of dental assistant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles are almost exclusively administrative or care-coordination positions rather than traditional chairside assisting roles.
How can I get hired as a dental assistant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an accredited dental assisting program and targeting entry-level openings at federally qualified health centers and community health organizations across New York City and upstate, which regularly hire new graduates. Northwell Health and NYC Health + Hospitals often post associate-level dental assistant roles that include on-the-job training. Coming in as a dental receptionist or sterilization technician at a group practice is also a recognized lateral move, and obtaining your radiography certification from the New York State Department of Health before you apply gives your application a concrete, employer-ready credential.
Where can I find and apply to dental assistant jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to dental assistant jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings to see roles that match your experience level and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
