Dental Assistant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a dental assistant in New York?
New York requires dental assistants who take X-rays to hold a radiography certificate issued or recognized by the New York State Department of Health. To obtain it, you must complete an approved radiation safety course and pass a competency exam. Most employers also expect a dental assisting program certificate from a community college or vocational school. The New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions oversees expanded-function registration for assistants performing additional clinical tasks.
Which companies hire dental assistants in New York?
Companies currently hiring dental assistants in New York include Aspen Dental, Premier Care Dental Management, and The Smilist Dental, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's large hospital systems, community health networks, and multi-location dental service organizations consistently maintain open positions across the state year-round.
Which New York cities have the most dental assistant jobs?
The cities with the most dental assistant openings in New York are New York, Brooklyn, and Bronx. New York City dominates the distribution due to its density of hospital-affiliated dental clinics, specialty practices, and community health centers, while Buffalo and Albany reflect strong regional demand from academic medical centers and Federally Qualified Health Centers serving upstate populations.
Are there remote dental assistant jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of dental assistant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, since most of the work requires direct patient contact in a clinical setting. The narrow exceptions tend to be administrative or care-coordination roles within larger dental groups that manage scheduling, insurance verification, or patient communication off-site.
How can I get hired as a dental assistant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a dental assisting certificate program at a New York community college such as CUNY's dental hygiene pipeline or a SUNY campus with allied health programs, then applying to entry-level chair-side or sterilization technician roles at large group practices or community health centers. NYC Health + Hospitals and Northwell Health periodically hire dental assistant trainees or patient care associates willing to cross-train. Earning your New York State radiography certificate before applying gives you a concrete edge over candidates who still need it.
Where can I find and apply to dental assistant jobs in New York?
