Rehabilitation Specialist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a rehabilitation specialist in New York?
The path depends on your specialty. Vocational rehabilitation counselors working in New York State programs typically need a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling and should pursue the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor credential, which the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification administers. Those working in behavioral health or developmental disabilities may need licensure through the New York State Education Department, such as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor credential, alongside a relevant bachelor's or master's degree.
Which companies hire rehabilitation specialists in New York?
Employers hiring rehabilitation specialists in New York right now include FOX Rehabilitation, Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation, and BestSelf Behavioral Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems and state-operated human services agencies account for a significant share of consistent openings across the state.
Which New York cities have the most rehabilitation specialist jobs?
Queens, Brooklyn, and Buffalo have the most rehabilitation specialist openings in New York. New York City dominates due to the concentration of hospital systems, nonprofit behavioral health agencies, and city-funded social service programs, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand through regional medical centers, state agency offices, and community rehabilitation providers serving those metro areas.
Are there remote rehabilitation specialist jobs in New York?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields, since much rehabilitation specialist work involves direct client contact, on-site assessments, and in-person coordination. About 14% of rehabilitation specialist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The parts of the role most likely to be remote are case documentation, telephonic follow-up, and care coordination functions that do not require face-to-face sessions.
How can I get hired as a rehabilitation specialist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a rehabilitation aide, direct support professional, or case manager associate role at a large New York employer such as a Northwell Health affiliate, an NYC Health + Hospitals facility, or an OPWDD-certified provider. Many New York nonprofits and state agencies hire new graduates into training-track positions. Completing a supervised fieldwork or internship placement required by your degree program and earning your Certified Rehabilitation Counselor credential as soon as you are eligible both strengthen your candidacy significantly.
Where can I find and apply to rehabilitation specialist jobs in New York?
