Behavioral Health Clinician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a behavioral health clinician in New York?
Becoming a behavioral health clinician in New York starts with earning a master's degree in a clinical discipline such as social work, mental health counseling, or marriage and family therapy. After graduation, you apply for licensure through the New York State Education Department, which oversees credentials including the LCSW, LMHC, and LMFT. Each license requires supervised post-degree hours and a passing score on the relevant national licensing exam before full independent practice is granted.
Which companies hire behavioral health clinicians in New York?
Employers hiring behavioral health clinicians in New York right now include ANDRUS, The Institute for Family Health, and Hamilton Madison House, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's size and density of public health infrastructure mean that large hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, and nonprofit community agencies are consistently among the steadiest sources of open positions.
Which New York cities have the most behavioral health clinician jobs?
Bronx, New York, and Astoria are the New York cities with the most behavioral health clinician openings, driven by the concentration of hospital networks, community mental health centers, and managed care organizations headquartered in and around those metros. New York City alone accounts for a substantial share of statewide demand given the scale of its public health system and the density of private behavioral health providers operating across its five boroughs.
Are there remote behavioral health clinician jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields, because telehealth has become a well-established delivery model for outpatient therapy and care coordination. About 9% of behavioral health clinician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly providers have adopted virtual platforms since they became standard practice. Roles focused on individual therapy, case management, and utilization review tend to be the most amenable to fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a behavioral health clinician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a pre-licensed clinician or clinical associate role while completing your supervised hours toward full licensure. Large New York employers such as NYC Health and Hospitals and Northwell Health hire at the pre-licensed level, and many nonprofit community mental health centers in the city actively recruit recent graduates and pair them with clinical supervisors. Lateral entry from adjacent roles such as case manager, crisis counselor, or peer support specialist is also common, and having a provisional LMSW or LMHCA credential issued by the New York State Education Department gives candidates a clear competitive edge.
Where can I find and apply to behavioral health clinician jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to behavioral health clinician jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state right now. Search the listings, find roles that match your license level, specialty, and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
