Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a psychiatric nurse practitioner in New York?
To become a psychiatric nurse practitioner in New York, you must earn a Master of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice with a psychiatric-mental health specialty, then pass the ANCC Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner board exam. Licensure is issued by the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions, which also requires a separate application for prescriptive authority. New York does not participate in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so out-of-state practitioners must apply directly for a New York license.
How much do psychiatric nurse practitioners make in New York?
Psychiatric nurse practitioners in New York earn a median of about $153,510 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $112,730 for the lowest 10% to over $198,060 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire psychiatric nurse practitioners in New York?
Employers hiring psychiatric nurse practitioners in New York right now include Essen Health Care, Sun River Health, and Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems and its dense network of community mental health clinics create consistent demand across both inpatient and outpatient settings throughout the state.
Which New York cities have the most psychiatric nurse practitioner jobs?
The cities with the most psychiatric nurse practitioner openings in New York are Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. New York City dominates the distribution because of its concentration of academic medical centers, public hospital systems, and community behavioral health organizations, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady openings through regional health systems and state-operated psychiatric facilities anchoring those markets.
Are there remote psychiatric nurse practitioner jobs in New York?
Yes, but they are less common than in many other fields because psychiatric nurse practitioner work typically requires direct patient evaluation, prescribing, and crisis assessment that most employers conduct in person. About 21% of psychiatric nurse practitioner openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and the roles most likely to offer remote or telehealth arrangements are medication management follow-ups and talk therapy adjuncts with established patients at outpatient practices.
How can I get hired as a psychiatric nurse practitioner in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate or residency fellowship program, and NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, and Montefiore Medical Center all run structured onboarding tracks for new psychiatric NPs. Candidates who completed clinical rotations at New York behavioral health sites have a clear advantage when applying to those same organizations. Moving from a registered nurse role in an inpatient psychiatric unit is a common lateral entry point, and holding full New York prescriptive authority at the time of application strengthens every new-grad application significantly.
