Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a psychiatric nurse practitioner in Texas?
You must earn a Master of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice with a PMHNP focus, then pass the PMHNP-BC certification exam through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. After that, you apply for an advanced practice registered nurse license with psychiatric-mental health specialty recognition through the Texas Board of Nursing. Texas also requires a prescriptive authority agreement with a supervising physician or facility before you can prescribe independently, which most large Texas health systems facilitate as part of onboarding.
How much do psychiatric nurse practitioners make in Texas?
Psychiatric nurse practitioners in Texas earn a median of about $131,670 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $96,880 for the lowest 10% to over $161,980 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire psychiatric nurse practitioners in Texas?
Employers hiring psychiatric nurse practitioners in Texas right now include Texas A&M University, LifeStance Health, and Baylor Scott & White Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas-based behavioral health networks, Veterans Affairs facilities, and large academic medical centers like UT Southwestern and UTMB Health are among the most consistent sources of full-time openings.
Which Texas cities have the most psychiatric nurse practitioner jobs?
Bryan, Crockett, and Austin have the most psychiatric nurse practitioner openings in Texas, driven by the concentration of major hospital systems, county mental health authorities, and Veterans Affairs medical centers in those metros. Smaller cities like Lubbock and Amarillo also generate steady demand because rural and underserved designations there attract federally funded community mental health programs that rely heavily on advanced practice providers.
Are there remote psychiatric nurse practitioner jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely analytical fields because most psychiatric NP work involves direct patient assessment, prescribing, and care coordination that traditionally requires an in-person encounter. About 20% of psychiatric nurse practitioner openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the growth of telepsychiatry platforms serving rural and underserved Texas counties. Medication management follow-ups and therapy-adjacent check-ins are the tasks most often delivered via telehealth.
How can I get hired as a psychiatric nurse practitioner in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate PMHNP residency or fellowship program, and large Texas systems including Baylor Scott and White Health and UT Health offer structured behavioral health NP residencies that accept candidates directly out of their PMHNP programs. Candidates who come from an RN background in inpatient psychiatry, emergency mental health, or corrections nursing have a meaningful advantage because that clinical context directly supports PMHNP scope. Obtaining your Texas APRN license and a collaborative practice agreement before you start applying signals readiness and shortens employer onboarding timelines.
Where can I find and apply to psychiatric nurse practitioner jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to psychiatric nurse practitioner jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings for roles that match your specialty, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
