How do you become a social work assistant in New York?
Most social work assistant roles in New York require at minimum an associate or bachelor's degree in social work, human services, or psychology. While New York does not issue a separate state license for social work assistants specifically, many employers require candidates to work under a licensed social worker and to register with the New York State Education Department if they intend to pursue LMSW or LCSW licensure later. Completing an internship with a New York agency during your degree program significantly strengthens your application.
Which companies hire social work assistants in New York?
Employers hiring social work assistants in New York right now include YAI - Seeing Beyond Disability, International Rescue Committee, and New York State Office of Mental Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large hospital networks, county departments of social services, and nonprofit human services agencies are consistently among the most active recruiters for this role across the state.
Which New York cities have the most social work assistant jobs?
Brooklyn, Albany, and Bronx have the most social work assistant openings in New York. New York City drives the largest share of listings given its concentration of hospital systems, child welfare offices, and community health organizations, while Buffalo and Albany reflect strong demand from county social services departments and regional nonprofit networks that anchor those metro areas.
Are there remote social work assistant jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Social work assistant roles are predominantly in-person because they involve direct client contact, home visits, and facility-based case coordination. About 0% of social work assistant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to involve administrative case coordination, documentation review, or telephone-based client follow-up rather than frontline direct services.

Completing a field placement internship during your degree at a New York agency is the strongest credential you can bring.
