Dental Assistant Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a dental assistant in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania requires dental assistants who perform expanded clinical functions to hold an Expanded Function Dental Assistant certificate issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry, which oversees credentialing for the profession. You can qualify by completing an accredited dental assisting program or by training under a licensed Pennsylvania dentist. You must also obtain a separate radiography certification before legally taking X-rays. Entry-level roles that do not involve expanded functions have fewer formal requirements, though most employers still prefer formal training.
Which companies hire dental assistants in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring dental assistants in Pennsylvania right now include Aspen Dental, Heartland Dental, and PERFECT SMILE DENTAL, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's mix of large academic dental centers, regional group practices, and national dental service organizations keeps hiring active across the state year-round.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most dental assistant jobs?
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Bensalem have the most dental assistant openings in Pennsylvania, reflecting the concentration of large hospital-affiliated dental clinics, multi-location group practices, and high patient-volume urban offices that anchor hiring in those markets. Smaller cities like Allentown and Reading also appear consistently because suburban population growth has driven expansion of community dental practices in those corridors.
Are there remote dental assistant jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're rare. Dental assisting is a hands-on chairside role, so the vast majority of positions require on-site presence at a clinic or practice. About 0% of dental assistant openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those exceptions typically involve administrative or patient coordination duties rather than clinical work.
How can I get hired as a dental assistant in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a dental assisting program at a Pennsylvania community college, such as those offered through community college systems in Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, which combine classroom instruction with clinical externship hours that substitute for prior work history. Large employers like Penn Dental Medicine and UPMC dental clinics regularly hire new graduates into entry-level chairside roles. Candidates who obtain their radiography certification and CPR card before applying, even without job experience, stand out meaningfully in the screening process.
Where can I find and apply to dental assistant jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to dental assistant jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from practices and dental organizations across the state. Search the listings, identify the roles that match your credentials and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
