Design Engineer Jobs in North Carolina: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a design engineer in North Carolina?
Becoming a design engineer in North Carolina starts with earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering from an accredited program. Many employers prefer candidates who pursue licensure through the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors, which requires passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam followed by the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam after gaining qualifying experience. Building a portfolio of CAD projects and internship experience at North Carolina manufacturing or technology firms strengthens candidacy considerably.
Which companies hire design engineers in North Carolina?
Employers hiring design engineers in North Carolina right now include LJB, Siemens, and Teleflex, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. North Carolina's mix of defense contractors, automotive suppliers, and advanced manufacturing firms means openings appear consistently across the state rather than concentrating in a single sector.
Which North Carolina cities have the most design engineer jobs?
Charlotte, Raleigh, and Morrisville have the most design engineer openings in North Carolina. Charlotte leads because of its concentration of energy, automation, and industrial manufacturing employers, the Raleigh-Durham Research Triangle draws demand from technology and life sciences firms, and Greensboro and Winston-Salem support openings tied to aerospace components, furniture manufacturing, and distribution equipment design.
Are there remote design engineer jobs in North Carolina?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since design engineering often requires hands-on collaboration with prototypes, lab equipment, or production floors. About 53% of design engineer openings tied to North Carolina are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the role's mixed nature. The portions of the work most suited to remote arrangements are CAD modeling, documentation, and design review, while physical testing and manufacturing coordination typically remain on-site.
How can I get hired as a design engineer in North Carolina with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a co-op or entry-level associate engineer role through the strong university-to-industry pipelines that North Carolina State University, UNC Charlotte, and NC A&T maintain with regional manufacturers and defense contractors. Large employers such as ABB and Honeywell regularly bring on new graduates into rotational or junior design roles. Candidates who come in with a strong CAD portfolio, any internship documentation, and progress toward the Fundamentals of Engineering credential stand out most in North Carolina screening processes.
Where can I find and apply to design engineer jobs in North Carolina?
You can find and apply to design engineer jobs in North Carolina on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly without needing to create a profile or sign up.
