Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Building Engineer
Align your credentials to U.S. specialty occupation standards
Your Australian engineering degree must map to the specific Building Engineer discipline you're applying for. A three-year bachelor's from an Australian university is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree, but have your transcripts ready to demonstrate the field match.
Target facilities-heavy employers with in-house engineering teams
Large commercial landlords, hospital systems, and university campuses run their own building engineering departments and are far more practiced at sponsorship than smaller firms that outsource facilities work. Filter your search to organizations that directly employ, not contract out, their building engineers.
Clarify the LCA requirement before you accept an offer
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before your E-3 application can proceed. Ask hiring managers early whether they've sponsored E-3 or H-1B workers before, because LCA certification typically takes seven business days and needs to happen before your consulate appointment.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to manage your documents
The E-3 paperwork, including the LCA, DS-160, and consulate preparation, has sequential dependencies that are easy to get out of order. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service handles the entire process from offer letter to consulate appointment, so nothing stalls at the documentation stage.
Address professional licensure questions at the interview stage
U.S. employers often ask whether Australian Building Engineers hold a PE license or equivalent. You don't need a U.S. PE license to qualify for an E-3, but clarifying your AIBS or Engineers Australia credentials upfront prevents delays when the employer prepares your specialty occupation support letter.
Book your consulate appointment as soon as the LCA is certified
E-3 visa interviews are processed at U.S. consulates in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. Appointment slots, particularly in Melbourne, can book out several weeks. Schedule immediately after DOL certifies your LCA to avoid gaps between your offer acceptance date and your intended start date.

Find Building Engineer JobsBuilding Engineer E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Building Engineer jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search Building Engineer roles where employers have confirmed E-3 sponsorship willingness. Most generic job boards don't filter by visa type, which means sorting through dozens of listings only to find the employer won't sponsor. Migrate Mate surfaces roles specifically matched to E-3 eligibility, saving you the back-and-forth.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Building Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes, Building Engineer positions that require a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, civil, or facilities engineering meet the USCIS specialty occupation standard. The key is that the specific role must require that degree as a minimum entry requirement. General maintenance or facilities coordinator roles without a degree requirement typically do not qualify, so the job description wording matters.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Building Engineers in the U.S.?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens, but it has a significant structural advantage: there is no annual lottery. H-1B has an 85,000-cap subject to random selection, meaning qualified candidates are frequently shut out for a year or more. With the E-3, if you meet the specialty occupation and degree requirements and have a sponsoring employer, you apply directly and there's no random element.
Can I change employers after arriving in the U.S. on an E-3 as a Building Engineer?
Yes, but you need a new LCA and a new E-3 visa tied to the new employer before you start work. The E-3 is employer-specific, so you can't simply transfer it. If you're already in the U.S., your new employer files a fresh LCA with the DOL, and you either apply for a new visa at a consulate or file for a change of status with USCIS.
