Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Pulmonologist
Get your credentials verified before applying
The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification is mandatory for U.S. clinical practice. Have your ECFMG certificate and state medical license in hand before contacting employers so sponsorship conversations start from a position of readiness.
Target academic medical centers and large health systems
Academic hospitals and multi-site health systems sponsor pulmonologists most consistently because they have in-house HR teams familiar with E-3 filings. Community hospitals may be willing but often lack prior experience with the LCA process, which slows offers.
Search for E-3 sponsorship roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork once you have an offer. Migrate Mate manages the DOL filing and consulate preparation end-to-end, removing the administrative burden from both you and your employer.
Clarify fellowship board certification expectations early
Many U.S. hospitals require or strongly prefer American Board of Internal Medicine pulmonary disease certification. Confirm whether your prospective employer will sponsor you before board eligibility or requires certification as a condition of the offer letter.
Confirm the LCA wage level matches your offer
The E-3 requires your employer to file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL certifying your wage meets the prevailing rate for your location and role. If your offered salary falls below the DOL wage level for your metro area, the LCA will not certify.
Use your J-1 waiver status as a sponsorship signal
If you completed a U.S. fellowship on a J-1 and served a Conrad 30 or federal agency waiver, hospitals in your service area already understand visa sponsorship obligations. That track record makes E-3 sponsorship conversations considerably more straightforward.

Find Pulmonologist JobsPulmonologist E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find pulmonologist jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point for Australian pulmonologists searching for E-3 sponsorship roles in the U.S. Academic medical centers, Veterans Affairs hospitals, and large integrated health systems sponsor pulmonologists most frequently. Filtering specifically for employers with prior E-3 or specialty occupation visa history saves significant time compared to cold outreach to hospitals unfamiliar with the process.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for pulmonologists?
The E-3 has no annual lottery, no per-country cap backlog, and can be filed at any time of year. The H-1B is subject to an annual lottery with roughly 25% selection odds for most applicants. For an Australian pulmonologist with a firm offer, the E-3 provides a predictable path to U.S. practice that the H-1B cannot guarantee.
Does my Australian fellowship training qualify as a specialty occupation under the E-3?
Pulmonology is a recognized specialty occupation under the E-3. Your Australian medical degree, FRACP fellowship, or equivalent postgraduate training satisfies the degree requirement. USCIS assesses whether a theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge is required for the role, which pulmonology consistently meets. Your ECFMG certification documents your credentials for U.S. immigration purposes.
Can I switch hospital employers while on an E-3 as a pulmonologist?
Yes, but you must have a new LCA certified by the DOL and a new E-3 visa issued before starting with the new employer. Unlike some other visa categories, the E-3 does not provide portability between employers. Build at least six to eight weeks into your transition timeline to allow for LCA certification and, if your visa stamp has expired, a consulate appointment in Australia.
