Verify your CIH credential transfers correctly
The ABIH-issued CIH credential is U.S.-based, but Australian occupational hygienists holding AIOH certification should confirm their qualifications meet specialty occupation standards before applying. A direct degree-to-role match strengthens your LCA filing significantly.
Target federal contractors with active compliance programs
Industries under OSHA-intensive oversight, aerospace, mining, chemical manufacturing, and defense contracting, routinely hire CIHs and have legal and HR teams already familiar with E-3 visa sponsorship. These employers file LCAs regularly and expect the process.
Confirm job postings require a specific hygiene degree
The E-3 specialty occupation requirement means the role must typically require a degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, or occupational safety. Postings that list 'any science degree' can create problems at the consulate, so filter for roles with explicit educational requirements.
Ask about LCA filing timing before accepting an offer
Your employer files the LCA with DOL before your consulate appointment can be scheduled. That certification typically takes seven business days. Factor this into your start date negotiation so the timeline doesn't create gaps in your current employment.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for LCA and consulate prep
CIH roles often involve multi-site work arrangements that complicate LCA filings. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service handles the DOL paperwork, visa application, and consulate appointment preparation end-to-end, reducing the risk of errors that delay your start date.
Address multi-site work arrangements upfront with employers
CIHs frequently work across multiple client sites or facilities. DOL requires the LCA to reflect the primary worksite location. Clarify with your employer how your role is classified before filing so the prevailing wage determination covers your actual work arrangement.
E-3 Visa Certified Industrial Hygienist: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Certified Industrial Hygienist jobs with E-3 sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for CIH roles where employers are already open to E-3 sponsorship. Because E-3 requires the employer to file an LCA with DOL, targeting companies in regulated industries, chemical manufacturing, mining, and defense contracting, increases your chances of finding employers who understand and expect the process.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Certified Industrial Hygienist role qualify as an E-3 specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in industrial hygiene, occupational health, environmental health, or a closely related field. The degree must theoretically and practically apply to the specific role. Positions that accept any science background without a field requirement can face specialty occupation challenges at the consulate.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for CIH roles?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens and has no lottery, you apply directly after securing a job offer and an approved LCA. The H-1B is subject to an annual cap and a randomized lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate. For qualified Australian CIHs, the E-3 path is more predictable and faster from offer to visa stamp.
Can I work across multiple client sites on an E-3 visa as a CIH?
You can, but the LCA filed by your employer must list the primary worksite, and DOL's prevailing wage determination is tied to that location. If you regularly work at client facilities in different wage areas, your employer may need to file amended or additional LCAs. Clarify this with your employer before your LCA is submitted to avoid compliance issues.
