Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Plastic Surgeon
Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
U.S. employers require Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification before sponsoring an E-3 for any surgical role. Confirm your ECFMG status is active and your USMLE scores are on file before approaching hospitals or practices.
Target academic medical centers and hospital systems
Large academic hospitals and multi-site health systems have dedicated HR and legal teams familiar with E-3 filings for specialist physicians. Independent private practices often lack this infrastructure, making your sponsorship conversation significantly harder from the start.
Distinguish your fellowship training in applications
Australian plastic surgery training pathways differ from U.S. residency structures. Spell out your FRACS qualification and subspecialty fellowship hours explicitly in your CV so hiring managers can map them to ACGME-equivalent experience without guesswork.
Negotiate LCA filing into your offer timeline
Your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with DOL before you can apply for the E-3 at a consulate. Build at least three to four weeks into your start-date negotiation to account for LCA processing and consulate appointment scheduling.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the paperwork
LCA compliance, prevailing wage documentation, and consulate packet preparation involve multiple DOL and USCIS requirements. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the entire process from offer to consulate appointment, so your employer isn't navigating it without specialist support.
Prepare a state medical license plan before your interview
E-3 approval doesn't guarantee you can practice on day one. Research the medical licensing timeline for your target state, since some states take three to six months to process foreign-trained physician applications, which affects your actual start date.

Find Plastic Surgeon JobsPlastic Surgeon E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Plastic Surgeon jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Search Migrate Mate to find Plastic Surgeon roles at employers already familiar with E-3 sponsorship. Filtering by visa type saves you from approaching employers who have never filed an LCA for a specialty physician before, which is one of the most common sources of delay for Australian surgeons.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Plastic Surgeon role qualify as an E-3 specialty occupation?
Yes. Plastic Surgery meets the specialty occupation definition because it requires a medical degree, ECFMG certification, and a state medical license as a minimum to enter the role. USCIS treats physician specialties as clear-cut specialty occupations, so qualification is rarely disputed at the consulate stage.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Plastic Surgeons?
The E-3 has no lottery and no annual numerical cap, meaning your employer can file and you can apply at the consulate at any time of year. The H-1B requires winning a lottery slot before any petition can proceed. For an Australian plastic surgeon with a job offer, the E-3 is a direct path that the H-1B is not.
Can I transfer my E-3 if I change hospital systems or practices?
Yes, but your new employer must file a new LCA with DOL and you'll need a new E-3 visa stamp if you travel internationally before the transfer is complete. You can begin working for the new employer once the LCA is certified and the E-3 petition is filed, but consulate stamping is required before re-entering the U.S. after any international travel.
