Align your degree to the research field
E-3 visa eligibility hinges on a direct match between your Australian degree and the research discipline. A psychology degree supports a behavioral research role; a general science degree may not satisfy the specialty occupation requirement for a molecular biology position.
Target universities and research institutions first
Academic medical centers, R1 universities, and federally funded research institutes file LCAs regularly and have HR teams familiar with E-3 sponsorship. Government contractors running NIH or NSF-funded projects are also structured to sponsor efficiently.
Request a job description that names your degree field
The LCA and visa application require the role to state a specific degree requirement. Ask your hiring contact to confirm the job description explicitly names your field, not just a generic bachelor's degree, before the offer is finalized.
Verify your employer can file the LCA before accepting
The employer must file a certified LCA with the DOL before you can attend your consulate appointment. Confirm your prospective employer understands this step and has filed LCAs before, or is prepared to start the DOL process immediately after your offer.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the full process
Research employers often underestimate the paperwork involved. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service handles your LCA filing, visa paperwork, and consulate preparation end-to-end, so neither you nor your employer stalls at an unfamiliar step after the offer.
Convert a temporary research contract into an E-3 role
Short-term or contract Research Assistant positions can still support an E-3 application if the employer is a legitimate U.S. entity and the role meets specialty occupation criteria. USCIS and the DOL assess the nature of the work, not just the contract length.
E-3 Visa Research Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Research Assistant jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australians searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. Search by job title and filter for employers with E-3 or LCA filing history. Research Assistant roles at universities, research institutes, and government contractors appear regularly and these employers are generally experienced with work visa requirements.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Research Assistant role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It depends on the specific position. A Research Assistant role qualifies when the employer requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field, such as neuroscience, public health, or economics. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field are harder to support under the specialty occupation definition, so the job description wording matters significantly.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Research Assistant positions?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens but has no lottery, no annual cap, and can be filed at any time of year. The H-1B visa is open to all nationalities but requires winning a lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate. For Australians, the E-3 is a far more reliable path to a Research Assistant role since approval doesn't depend on chance.
Can my employer sponsor me for an E-3 if they haven't done it before?
Yes. Any legitimate U.S. employer can file an E-3 sponsorship for the first time. The process starts with a Labor Condition Application filed with the DOL, which most employers can complete without prior experience. The practical challenge is that HR teams unfamiliar with the E-3 may conflate it with the H-1B process, so providing clear documentation of the E-3 requirements upfront helps avoid delays.
