Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees in chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory science are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees for E-3 purposes. Gather your academic transcripts and a credential evaluation before approaching employers.
Target employers with active DOL LCA history
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data for lab technician LCA filings. Employers who have previously certified LCAs for similar roles already understand the E-3 process and are less likely to decline on administrative grounds.
Clarify the job description requires a specific degree
The E-3 specialty occupation requirement fails when a job posting says a degree is preferred rather than required. Before applying, confirm the role's written description specifies a bachelor's degree in a directly related scientific field, not just any degree.
Secure a prevailing wage determination before negotiating
Your employer files an LCA certifying your offered wage meets the DOL prevailing wage for the role and location. Request this step early in negotiations so a low initial offer doesn't create a compliance problem when the LCA is submitted.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for end-to-end support
Once you have a job offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork through to your consulate appointment. This removes the administrative burden from both you and an employer who may be filing an E-3 for the first time.
Prepare for consulate questions about laboratory duties
Consular officers assess whether your role genuinely requires a science degree. Bring documentation showing specific technical responsibilities, the instruments and methodologies you use, and how your qualifications directly apply to those duties.

Find Lab Technician JobsLab Technician E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Lab Technician jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended way to search for Lab Technician roles where employers are open to E-3 sponsorship. Because the E-3 has no lottery and a relatively low administrative burden, more employers are willing to sponsor than you might expect, particularly in research, pharmaceutical, and clinical laboratory settings.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Lab Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It depends on how the employer defines the role. If the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific scientific field such as chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory science, it generally qualifies. Roles where any bachelor's degree is acceptable, or where the degree is listed as preferred rather than required, are unlikely to meet the specialty occupation standard.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Lab Technician roles?
The E-3 has no annual lottery and no cap on available visas, so there's no random selection process that could leave you without status despite a valid offer. The H-1B is capped at 85,000 per year and requires lottery selection before filing. For Australian lab professionals, the E-3 means you can start work as soon as your visa is approved rather than waiting for a lottery result.
Can my employer file an E-3 if they have never sponsored a visa before?
Yes. The E-3 process is simpler than most employer-sponsored visas because it doesn't require PERM labor certification or a lottery. The employer files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL, which typically certifies within seven working days, and then you attend a consulate interview. First-time sponsors often find the process more straightforward than anticipated, particularly for lab roles with clear degree requirements.
