INTRODUCTION
The Department of Physics is a medium-sized department in the College of Arts and Sciences (The College), composed of 35 professors, about 100 graduate students, and an undergraduate Physics major population that has doubled in number in the past 5 years. We have a strong academic program offering undergraduate degrees (B.A., B.Sc.) and graduate degrees (Ph.D., M.A.T., M.S.). These are extraordinary times in physics, with the development of new tools for observing the universe and testing its fundamental laws. Here at Indiana University (IU), we investigate new materials with exotic properties, make use of innovative technologies based on those materials, and gain an emerging ability to control entangled quantum-mechanical systems. Our faculty and students engage in research that leads discovery in the many areas, both theoretical and applied. We look at the interactions of many bodies as part of condensed matter and material science, study subatomic particle physics, and apply the tools of physics to biological systems. We examine the behavior of many charged particles as part of accelerator physics and explore astrophysical systems. Our world-class faculty strives to develop a strong teaching and research environment, and the positive atmosphere in our department fosters learning and research in several disciplines of physics. We currently have nationally ranked groups carrying out research in particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, cosmology, condensed matter physics and material science, biophysics, and accelerator physics. Research activities are also channeled via institutes and centers such as the Nuclear Theory Center, the Center for Spacetime Symmetries, and the Center for Exploration of Energy and Matter (CEEM), housed at the Multidisciplinary Engineering and Science Hall (MESH, formerly the IU Cyclotron Facility).

Frame your Australian degree for U.S. employers
A three-year Australian bachelor's in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry is accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 visa purposes. Attach a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator to remove any doubt before interviews.
Target labs with existing LCA filing history
Research institutions, hospital systems, and pharmaceutical companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications before already understand the DOL certification process. Prioritise these employers when applying, as they won't need to learn E-3 requirements from scratch.
Clarify the specialty occupation requirement upfront
Not every lab assistant posting qualifies as a specialty occupation. Confirm the job description explicitly requires a degree in a specific scientific field, not just any bachelor's degree, before your employer files the LCA with DOL.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service after your offer
Once you have a signed offer letter, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end, from DOL certification through consulate appointment preparation in Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth.
Negotiate E-3 prevailing wage compliance into your offer
Your employer must certify to DOL that your salary meets the prevailing wage for the lab assistant role in that geographic area. Ask your employer to confirm the wage level before you accept, as a mismatch delays LCA approval.
Time your consulate appointment around lab start dates
E-3 visa interviews at Australian consulates can book out several weeks. Once your employer's LCA is DOL-certified, schedule your appointment immediately so processing doesn't push your start date back and affect onboarding arrangements.
E-3 Visa Lab Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Lab Assistant jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Search Migrate Mate to find Lab Assistant roles at U.S. employers who are open to E-3 sponsorship. Because the E-3 has no lottery and is exclusive to Australian nationals, many research labs and clinical facilities are willing to sponsor when they find a qualified candidate, even if the role isn't explicitly advertised as visa-sponsored.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Lab Assistant role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It depends on how the position is defined. A lab assistant role qualifies if the employer requires a bachelor's degree in a specific scientific field like biology, chemistry, or biochemistry as a minimum. Roles where any degree suffices, or where no degree is required, won't meet the E-3 specialty occupation standard under DOL and USCIS criteria.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Lab Assistant roles?
The E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens and has no annual lottery, so you can apply any time of year with an employer who files the LCA. The H-1B visa has an 85,000-slot annual cap with a randomised lottery, meaning most applicants wait years for selection. For Australian lab professionals, the E-3 is the faster, more predictable path to U.S. employment.
Can I change lab employers after I'm already working on an E-3?
Yes, but you can't simply transfer your E-3 to the new employer. Your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new E-3 visa issued at an Australian consulate before starting the new role. Plan for the LCA certification period, typically seven business days, plus consulate appointment wait times before making the switch.
