E-3 Visa Research Fellow Jobs
Research Fellow roles at U.S. universities and research institutions qualify as E-3 specialty occupations, making Australian academics eligible for E-3 visa sponsorship without entering an H-1B lottery. Your doctoral or research degree directly satisfies the specialty occupation requirement, and the visa renews in two-year increments with no cap.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Research Fellow
Translate your credentials for U.S. institutions
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees and doctoral qualifications are accepted by USCIS for E-3 specialty occupation purposes, but your application materials should explicitly state the U.S.-equivalent degree level so institutional HR teams don't flag your credentials as non-standard.
Target R1 and R2 research universities first
Doctoral universities with high research activity file LCAs regularly and have established international hiring workflows. Their HR and legal teams already understand E-3 sponsorship obligations, which shortens the gap between offer and LCA certification with the DOL.
Clarify E-3 sponsor obligations before signing
Many research institutions assume all visa sponsorship means H-1B. Confirm in writing that your offer is structured as an E-3, that the employer will file the LCA with DOL, and that the institution will not require you to participate in any lottery or cap-subject process.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service after your offer
Once you have a signed offer letter, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork from start to consulate appointment. This is especially useful when your institution's legal team is unfamiliar with E-3 filings specifically.
Address grant-funded roles and multi-year timelines
Research Fellow positions are often tied to two- or three-year grants. Your E-3 renews every two years with no cap, so align your renewal cycle with grant milestones and ensure your employer knows they can file renewals without re-entering any lottery process.
Get your LCA certified before your consulate appointment
DOL must certify your Labor Condition Application before you can attend your visa interview. The certification window is typically seven business days, but build extra time into your timeline if your institution is filing an LCA for an E-3 for the first time.

Find Research Fellow JobsResearch Fellow E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find Research Fellow jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for E-3 visa sponsorship roles in the United States. Unlike general job boards, it filters for employers with active E-3 and LCA filing history so you can identify Research Fellow positions at institutions that already understand the sponsorship process, not just those open to considering it.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000â$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Research Fellow role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes. Research Fellow positions require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as biology, chemistry, engineering, or public health, which satisfies USCIS's specialty occupation definition. Postdoctoral and faculty research roles at universities and nonprofit research institutes routinely qualify. Roles where any degree field is acceptable, regardless of relevance, are less likely to pass scrutiny.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Research Fellow positions?
The E-3 has no annual cap and no lottery, so your employer can file at any time of year and your start date isn't tied to an October 1 cycle. The H-1B subjects most applicants to a random selection process with roughly a one-in-three chance of selection. For Research Fellow roles, where hiring timelines are driven by grant cycles and academic calendars, the E-3's flexibility is a material advantage.
Can I change research institutions while on an E-3 visa?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need to obtain a new E-3 visa stamp before re-entering the United States, or file a change of status if you remain in-country. There's no portability rule equivalent to the H-1B's AC21, so the new LCA must be certified before you begin work at the new institution.
