Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Research Associate
Align your degree to the research role
Your degree field must match the Research Associate role, not just research broadly. A chemistry degree supports a biochemistry position but won't hold up for a public health research role. Get this alignment clear before applying.
Target institutions with established LCA history
Universities, national laboratories, and NIH-funded research centers file LCAs regularly and have HR teams familiar with E-3 sponsorship. Private biotech startups may want to sponsor but lack the internal process to move quickly.
Request the job description in writing early
Your employer needs a finalized job description to file the Labor Condition Application with DOL. Ask for this before your offer letter is drafted so the LCA can be filed without delay after you accept.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the full process
Once you have an offer, Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service handles your LCA submission, DS-160, and consulate preparation end-to-end. This matters when your start date is fixed and your employer has no prior E-3 experience.
Confirm your employer's E-Verify enrollment before signing
USCIS requires certain federal contractors and government-funded institutions to use E-Verify. If your research role is grant-funded at a covered institution, confirm enrollment status before you accept so onboarding isn't delayed.
Check your Australian degree equivalency in advance
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 purposes, but your employer's HR team may request a credential evaluation. Have this ready before visa paperwork starts.

Find Research Associate JobsResearch Associate E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Research Associate jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search Research Associate roles filtered specifically for E-3 visa sponsorship. Most general job boards don't distinguish between H-1B and E-3 sponsoring employers, so you can waste time applying to roles where the hiring team has no E-3 experience. Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have filed LCAs for Australian nationals in research roles.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Research Associate role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific related field such as biology, neuroscience, chemistry, or social sciences. Roles where any degree is acceptable, or where a degree is preferred but not required, can fail the specialty occupation test. Make sure the job description states that a degree in a particular discipline is required.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Research Associate roles?
The E-3 has no annual cap and no lottery, so your employer can file at any time and you can start as soon as the visa is approved. The H-1B is capped at 85,000 per year with a lottery that runs once annually in March, meaning a qualified Research Associate could wait over a year before even entering the system. For Australian citizens, the E-3 is the faster and more predictable path.
Can I transfer my E-3 to a new research employer if I change jobs?
Yes, but you can't port the E-3 the way some other visa categories allow. Your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need to attend a new consulate appointment in Australia to get a new visa stamp. You can continue working for your current employer until the new E-3 is approved, so plan your transition timeline accordingly.
