Education Counselor Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a education counselor in Montana?
To become a school-based education counselor in Montana, you must earn a master's degree in school counseling from an accredited program and obtain a School Counselor Specialist License through the Montana Office of Public Instruction. The OPI requires completion of an approved counseling program, a supervised practicum, and passing the Praxis School Counselor exam. Counselors working outside K-12 in higher education or nonprofit settings typically need a master's in counseling or student affairs but do not require an OPI license.
Which companies hire education counselors in Montana?
Montana education counselor roles are posted by Sunshine Academy, ACI Federal, and HER Campaign and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's public school districts, tribal colleges, and the University of Montana system are among the most consistent sources of full-time openings across the state.
Which Montana cities have the most education counselor jobs?
Billings, Laurel, and Ashland account for the greatest concentration of education counselor openings in Montana. Billings leads because it is the state's largest city with the most extensive K-12 district and several higher education campuses, while Missoula and Great Falls follow as major regional centers anchored by the University of Montana and significant public school systems respectively.
Are there remote education counselor jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of education counselor openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the role's strong emphasis on in-person student interaction. The tasks most commonly done remotely are virtual college advising, curriculum planning, and administrative case documentation for programs that serve rural or distance-learning students.
How can I get hired as a education counselor in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a graduate assistantship or practicum placement within a Montana university counseling or student affairs office, such as those at Montana State University or the University of Montana, which regularly bring on emerging counselors through supervised roles. Lateral moves from teaching, social work, or academic advising are common and well-regarded by Montana school districts. Completing your OPI School Counselor Specialist License coursework and accumulating practicum hours before graduating gives you a strong competitive edge with smaller rural districts that cannot wait for candidates to finish credentialing after hiring.
Where can I find and apply to education counselor jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to education counselor jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
