Electrical Engineering Intern Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical engineering intern in California?
The concrete path into an electrical engineering internship in California starts with enrollment in an ABET-accredited EE or closely related program at a California university such as UC Berkeley, Cal Poly, or UCLA. No state-issued license is required at the intern level, but completing foundational coursework in circuits, electromagnetics, and digital systems before applying gives candidates a clear edge. Many California employers post openings through their university partnerships mid-semester and prefer candidates who can commit to a full academic-year or summer rotation.
How much do electrical engineering interns make in California?
Electrical engineering interns in California earn a median of about $144,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $81,840 for the lowest 10% to over $217,760 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire electrical engineering interns in California?
Employers hiring electrical engineering interns in California right now include Helix Electric, Etched, and ChargePoint, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of semiconductor, defense, and clean-energy companies means internship programs here often include structured rotations across hardware and systems teams.
Which California cities have the most electrical engineering intern jobs?
San Jose, San Diego, and Oakland have the most electrical engineering intern openings in California. The Bay Area leads due to its dense cluster of semiconductor and consumer electronics headquarters, San Diego draws heavily from defense contractors and wireless technology firms like Qualcomm, and Los Angeles reflects demand from aerospace and clean-energy companies anchored in the region.
Are there remote electrical engineering intern jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Electrical engineering intern roles are largely hands-on, requiring lab access, hardware prototyping, or on-site equipment testing, which limits remote options significantly. About 2% of electrical engineering intern openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be concentrated in firmware, simulation, or data-analysis sub-tasks rather than full intern rotations.
How can I get hired as a electrical engineering intern in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying through your California university's career center or co-op office, which maintains direct pipelines to employers like Northrop Grumman, Qualcomm, and Pacific Gas and Electric that run structured new-student programs. Building a portfolio of personal or class projects, even simple PCB designs or Arduino-based systems documented on GitHub, serves as a stand-in for work history. Adjacent roles like electronics technician assistant or lab aide at a California community college or research institution are common stepping stones.
Where can I find and apply to electrical engineering intern jobs in California?
You can find and apply to electrical engineering intern jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings. Find roles that fit your skills, schedule, and location, then apply directly to each employer through the listing.
