Engineering Intern Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a engineering intern in New Jersey?
Most engineering intern roles in New Jersey require active enrollment in an ABET-accredited engineering program at a college or university. Employers in industries like pharmaceuticals and defense typically expect candidates to have completed at least one year of core coursework. New Jersey does not require a state license to work as an intern, but candidates pursuing engineering licensure should be aware of the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, which governs the path to becoming a licensed professional engineer after graduation.
Which companies hire engineering interns in New Jersey?
Companies currently hiring engineering interns in New Jersey include WSP, Ardurra, and Burns & McDonnell, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New Jersey's dense concentration of pharmaceutical headquarters, defense contractors, and utility providers makes it one of the more varied internship markets on the East Coast.
Which New Jersey cities have the most engineering intern jobs?
Morristown, Cherry Hill, and Clifton have the most engineering intern openings in New Jersey. Newark anchors demand through its proximity to major corporate campuses and infrastructure projects, while Princeton draws heavily from its research and pharmaceutical corridor, and Parsippany serves as a hub for defense, engineering services, and energy firms with large technical teams.
Are there remote engineering intern jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they're rare. About 13% of engineering intern openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most engineering internship work. When remote options do appear, they tend to be concentrated in software-adjacent engineering roles such as data systems, CAD modeling review, or engineering documentation.
How can I get hired as a engineering intern in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to structured internship programs run by large New Jersey employers before completing your degree. Companies like Johnson & Johnson, PSEG, and Lockheed Martin operate formal internship pipelines designed for students with limited hands-on experience. Completing relevant coursework in your discipline and building a portfolio of academic or personal projects strengthens your application.
