Electrical Engineering Intern Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical engineering intern in New Jersey?
The most direct path is enrollment in an ABET-accredited electrical engineering program at a New Jersey university such as Rutgers, NJIT, or Stevens Institute of Technology, then applying to structured summer or co-op programs before graduation. New Jersey does not require a state license for interns working under licensed engineers, but completing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early strengthens any application and is administered through the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
Which companies hire electrical engineering interns in New Jersey?
Employers hiring electrical engineering interns in New Jersey right now include Burns & McDonnell, WSP, and Ardurra, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New Jersey's concentration of defense contractors, utility companies, and life sciences firms means intern programs here often involve regulated environments with hands-on hardware or instrumentation work.
Which New Jersey cities have the most electrical engineering intern jobs?
The cities with the most electrical engineering intern openings in New Jersey are Morristown, Elizabeth, and Somerville. The distribution reflects where major engineering employers are headquartered or operate large facilities, with the Newark and Princeton corridors anchored by defense, pharmaceutical, and utility companies that run formal intern cohorts, while suburban hubs like Parsippany and Moorestown draw volume from aerospace and telecom operations.
Are there remote electrical engineering intern jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they're rare. Electrical engineering intern work typically involves lab equipment, prototyping, or on-site systems that require physical presence. About 0% of electrical engineering intern openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those positions tend to focus on simulation, data analysis, or software-side tasks rather than hardware design or testing.
How can I get hired as a electrical engineering intern in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to formal co-op or intern programs at large New Jersey employers while still in school, since employers like PSE&G, Honeywell, and L3Harris structure these programs specifically for students with no prior professional experience. Building a portfolio of academic lab projects or a senior design prototype, earning early coursework credit in circuit design or embedded systems, and completing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam all give candidates a measurable edge over peers with identical academic records.
Where can I find and apply to electrical engineering intern jobs in New Jersey?
You can find and apply to electrical engineering intern jobs in New Jersey on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, identify roles that match your background and availability, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
