Environmental Attorney Jobs in Boston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a environmental attorney job in Boston?
Focus on the sectors driving Boston hiring: clean energy developers, environmental consulting firms, state and federal agencies based in the city, and Am Law firms with dedicated environmental practices in the Seaport and Downtown Crossing. Candidates with MEPA or NEPA permitting experience, brownfield redevelopment work, or offshore wind regulatory backgrounds stand out. Networking through the Massachusetts Bar Association's Environmental Law Section opens doors that cold applications rarely do.
Which companies hire environmental attorneys in Boston?
Employers hiring environmental attorneys in Boston right now include Latham & Watkins LLP, New England Legal Search, and Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Boston's mix of large law firms, energy companies, public utilities, and state environmental agencies means openings appear across the public and private sectors year-round.
Are there remote environmental attorney jobs in Boston?
Yes, though with limits: environmental attorney work often requires site visits, agency hearings, and in-person client meetings, so fully remote roles are less common than in desk-heavy legal specialties. About 43% of environmental attorney openings tied to Boston are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with flexibility most common in transactional, compliance advisory, and policy-focused positions rather than litigation or permitting roles that involve fieldwork.
How can I get a environmental attorney job in Boston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Boston is a clerkship or fellowship with the Massachusetts Attorney General's Environmental Protection Division or the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, both of which regularly bring on junior attorneys. Environmental consulting firms in the Seaport also hire junior counsel for compliance support roles. A clinics background from Boston University or Northeastern's environmental law programs, or a published note on Massachusetts climate policy, gives candidates a concrete local edge.
Which industries hire the most environmental attorneys in Boston?
Boston environmental attorney roles concentrate in Law & Legal Services, Consulting & Professional Services, and Staffing & Recruiting, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Boston's status as a hub for offshore wind development, brownfield redevelopment along the harbor, and state environmental enforcement keeps those sectors in consistent need of environmental legal talent.
