Environmental Health and Safety Specialist
Position Summary
Assists the site Environmental Health and Safety Manager/Supervisor in managing all programs for environmental compliance, loss control, safety, health, fire prevention, emergency response planning and associated training. Assists in designing and delivering programs to meet federal, state, local and corporate environmental safety and health regulations while maintaining the applicable records and documentations demonstrable during an inspection or audit. Works with all departments, as well as site and corporate EH&S, government agencies, industry associations, and peers within our industry.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Manages and maintains current and accurate safety policies, manuals and procedures to ensure safety within our facility.

Maintains a current working knowledge of all applicable federal and state, local regulations, as well as corporate guidelines and policies; educates plant staff and insures compliance.

Develops effective training programs that satisfy legal requirements and to reinforce a safe environment.

Provides training (formal and informal) to employees, supervisors and managers on safety policies and practices.

Manages and updates emergency action plans for site.

Provides safety orientation for all new employees as well as all visiting contractors.

Serves as a safety representative for installation and safe operation of all new equipment and buildings.

Conducts Safety Committee meetings for both operations, office and management employees.

Performs safety audits throughout the manufacturing facility as required for internal and external sources.

Manages worker compensation claims in partnership with human resources and communicates with the insurance carrier and broker as necessary.

Conducts risk assessment for all departments and make recommendations for modifications to practices, policies and procedures to ensure safe work environment.

Maintains an active presence on the production, warehouse floor and observes employees throughout the plant and provides feedback/coaching in regards to unsafe acts and behaviors.

Communicates regulatory and permit requirements to the plant.

Maintains and orders a supply of safety equipment (PPE) used by the facility.

May assist in managing aspects of security for the Facility.

Participates in any variety of meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, policies, and regulatory guidelines.

Performs other job-related duties in area of responsibility as assigned.
Education/Experience:
Bachelor degree in Science related field with minimum 1 years of work experience dedicated to health and safety and/or environmental field in an industrial setting. (Or equivalent education and work experience.)
Possess computer skills – specifically Microsoft Office Suite.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and quality and procedure manuals.
Math Ability:
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Primarily active manufacturing environment. Personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when in the plant and warehouse areas. PPE may include safety shoes, eye and ear protection, reflective vests and hairnets or hats along with any other necessary protection. Temperatures in the plant/warehouse can range a great deal from season to season. The employee will be exposed to considerable paper dust and employees will also be exposed to noise levels that may require hearing protection.
