Environmental Project Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental project manager in California?
Most environmental project managers in California start with a bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, civil engineering, or a closely related field and then build experience under senior staff on CEQA, remediation, or permitting projects. California does not issue a single required license for the title, but employers strongly favor candidates who hold a California Professional Geologist or Professional Engineer license, an REA designation, or a Hazardous Waste Operations certification, depending on the specialty.
How much do environmental project managers make in California?
Environmental project managers in California earn a median of about $210,230 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $130,730 for the lowest 10% to over $330,050 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire environmental project managers in California?
Employers hiring environmental project managers in California right now include BKF Engineers, HAZEN AND SAWYER, and HALEY & ALDRICH, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale of infrastructure investment, active Brownfields portfolio, and strict CEQA requirements make it one of the largest markets for this role in the country.
Which California cities have the most environmental project manager jobs?
San Francisco, Sacramento, and Irvine have the most environmental project manager openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through large infrastructure and remediation contracts, Sacramento concentrates state agency and water board work, and the Bay Area's tech and energy sectors generate consistent demand for environmental compliance and due diligence roles.
Are there remote environmental project manager jobs in California?
Yes, but they're limited. Site visits, agency coordination meetings, and field oversight are core to most California environmental project manager roles, which constrains full-remote options. About 41% of environmental project manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in CEQA document preparation, grant writing, or regulatory reporting tasks that can be completed off-site.
How can I get hired as a environmental project manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an environmental scientist or project coordinator role at a California-based environmental consulting firm such as Tetra Tech, AECOM, or Stantec, where new graduates support senior project managers on CEQA reviews, site assessments, and permit applications before leading their own scopes. State agencies including CalEPA and the Regional Water Quality Control Boards also hire entry-level environmental scientists who develop project management skills on the job. Earning a 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or completing a CEQA certificate program through a California community college gives entry-level candidates a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to environmental project manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to environmental project manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across consulting firms, public agencies, and private industry. Find roles that fit your experience and specialty and apply directly.
